Through the 19th century, Dixon & Sons grew from a small operation of fewer than 50 hands into one of the British Empire's premier metalware and silversmithing manufacturers - employing over 700 workers by 1890 and peaking near 1,850 by 1906. Cornish Place became known for pairing industrial-scale machinery with elite hand-finishing, a combination that let the firm compete on both volume and craftsmanship.

The company built a substantial export trade to the United States and European high society, and its work was commissioned by royalty and prominent dignitaries - cementing its reputation as one of the great names in English silversmithing. The business remained family-run for 170 years, until 1976, and continued manufacturing at the historic Cornish Place site until independent operations ceased in 1992.
